GRIDCo announces emergency power outage in Greater Accra

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced an emergency power outage in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The interruption, scheduled from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., is necessary to replace a damaged transmission tower on the 161kV Tema–Achimota line at Ashaiman.

The damage occurred after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being performed on its tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW). This incident has prompted a major enforcement directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor.

Following the minister's directive, GRIDCo has issued a one-month ultimatum to all individuals, businesses, and entities occupying transmission line corridors. Encroachers must vacate these protected areas and cease unauthorized activities—including construction, excavation, and commercial operations—or face legal action and removal by security agencies and local assemblies. The directive cites the Transmission Line Protection Regulations of 1967 as the legal basis for these enforcement measures.
