Ghana Evangelical Missions Association urges churches to fight illegal mining

The Ghana Evangelical Missions Association (GEMA) is calling on Christian leaders to use their pulpits to actively campaign against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Dr. Kofi Aligya, President of GEMA, stated that mere concern regarding the destruction of Ghana’s forests and water bodies is insufficient to address the crisis.

Aligya emphasized that the church must move beyond public commentary to mobilize congregations against the practice. He highlighted the severe public health implications of illegal mining, noting its link to kidney damage among many Ghanaians.

In addition to urging religious leaders to take a more active role in shaping public attitudes, GEMA has appealed to the Ghanaian government to intensify its efforts and implement all possible measures to combat galamsey and protect the nation's natural resources.
