Ghana expands flood relief operations as GH¢300‑350 million allocated for aid and mitigation
The Ghanaian government has intensified its flood response across seven regions, delivering food, water, shelter materials, blankets and medical supplies to displaced families. Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is conducting the effort in phases, with the first phase covering parts of Accra and the second reaching additional districts in the Central, Volta, Western, Ashanti, Western North and Eastern regions. The deployment involves the Ghana Armed Forces, police, emergency responders, health workers and volunteers.
In parallel, President John Dramani Mahama authorized the release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund—GH¢150 million for emergency relief and GH¢150 million for mitigation works. A parliamentary announcement later cited a total of GH¢350 million, split as GH¢200 million for relief and GH¢150 million for flood control. Analysts note the recurring reliance on emergency financing for floods, questioning whether predictable climate risks should be funded through regular budgeting rather than ad‑hoc allocations.
