Ghana explores electric mining trucks and EV technician training

Ghana’s Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, is advocating for the adoption of electric vehicle (EV) technology within the nation’s mining sector to reduce fuel costs and environmental impact. During an official visit to the Longking manufacturing facility in China, the Minister observed the production of 25 heavy-duty electric mining dump trucks. These 230-tonne capacity vehicles are destined for the Zijin Golden Ridge Mine in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

To support this industrial transition, the Ghanaian government is considering the establishment of a specialized training center. This facility would aim to equip local mechanics with the technical expertise required to diagnose, service, and repair the latest generation of electric cars and heavy-duty trucks. Minister Buah emphasized that developing a local workforce is essential to ensure the country can maintain electric mobility systems independently rather than relying solely on foreign specialists.
