Ghana explores national centre for hearing and cochlear implant care
Ghana is exploring the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Hearing, Communication and Cochlear Implant Care. The proposed facility aims to expand access to specialist services and strengthen local healthcare capacity.
The centre would integrate various services, including hearing screening, diagnosis, ear, nose and throat (ENT) care, audiology, hearing technology, cochlear implant services, speech and language therapy, rehabilitation, and research.
Discussions regarding the proposal involved Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith, Emilio Alonso Mendoza of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Roxana Semorile of Semorile Holdings, LLC, and Maabena Webb of Region17. Stakeholders emphasized that the centre should be Ghanaian-led and complement, rather than replace, existing national health and academic institutions.
A key component of the plan is to build sustainable local expertise. The model involves international specialists working alongside Ghanaian healthcare professionals to facilitate skill transfers, eventually enabling local professionals to train others. The initiative also seeks to establish Ghana as a regional hub for professional training and knowledge-sharing in hearing healthcare across Africa.
