Ghana faces challenges with French language proficiency

Despite being a member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and situated within a predominantly French-speaking sub-region, Ghana faces challenges regarding French language proficiency among its citizens.

While the national syllabus has undergone reforms to emphasize communicative competence and practical usage over rote memorization, many students and university graduates still struggle to communicate effectively. Previous issues were often attributed to an over-emphasis on memorization or the use of corporal punishment by instructors, as well as a reliance on teachers from neighboring Francophone countries who may have limited English proficiency.
