Ghana faces political risk as Supreme Court reviews presidential term limits

Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of Ghana's New Patriotic Party, warned that a "strange" interpretation of Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution by the Supreme Court could set a dangerous precedent. He argued that allowing a president to serve more than two elected terms – whether consecutive or non‑consecutive – would undermine the constitutional intent, create a loophole for repeated returns to power, and threaten democratic stability. Boakye cited President John Mahama’s comments and said any reinterpretation could throw Ghana "into a state of turmoil." He emphasized that the Constitution clearly limits presidential tenure to two terms and cautioned against political motives behind a re‑reading of the article.
