Ghana FDA intensifies monitoring of iodised salt production

The Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced plans to intensify monitoring of salt produced for human consumption. The initiative aims to ensure that salt is adequately iodised to protect consumers from iodine deficiency disorders and to maintain strict safety standards.

Launched at Ada Songor, the salt fortification and iodisation programme involves collaboration between the FDA, the Ada Songor Lagoon Association (ASLA), the Ada West District Assembly, the Ghana Police Service, and the Judicial Service. Benjamin Osei Tutu, Head of Food-borne Diseases at the FDA, warned producers and transporters against carrying industrial and edible salt in the same vehicle to prevent cross-contamination and the accidental diversion of industrial salt for human use.

To support the initiative, ASLA has secured sufficient iodine for salt produced at Ada Songor and plans to extend iodine supplies to selected salt artisans in the Volta Region. Salt artisans have also undergone training to ensure the correct dosage of iodine is applied to different volumes of salt.
