Ghana floods collapse dozens of buildings, killing two in Cape Coast
Heavy rains caused severe flooding in Ghana's Central and Western Regions, triggering building collapses. In Cape Coast, two people – 27‑year‑old Rukaya Issah and three‑year‑old Hanson Ato Mensah – died when structures gave way after a torrential downpour on June 19. National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials, including regional director Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah, attended the victims' burial and pledged to strengthen safety inspections, clear unsafe structures and improve drainage to prevent future tragedies.
In the Western Region's Wassa Amenfi West Municipality, flooding from the Samre and Tano rivers led to the collapse of more than 24 buildings in Samreboi and Asankragwa. No fatalities were reported, but residents were displaced and moved to emergency shelters. NADMO municipal director Elvis Koffie reported ongoing relief efforts, relocation of affected families, and heightened monitoring of the flood‑prone areas.
Both incidents underscore the vulnerability of Ghanaian communities to extreme rainfall and the government's focus on both immediate response and long‑term mitigation measures.
