Ghana Floods Prompt Massive Insurance Payouts and Industry Call for Wider Coverage
Heavy rains in Accra caused severe flooding, leading insurance companies to process and pay out millions of Ghana cedis to policyholders. At the 2026 Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana conference, President Solomon Lartey noted the scale of claims and stressed the vulnerability of families without coverage.
Acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, used a national flood‑cleanup event to urge Ghanaians to view insurance as essential protection, not a luxury. She announced dedicated claim desks for flood victims and pledged faster payouts. Industry leaders, including Ghana Reinsurance CEO Seth Kobla Aklasi and Impact Life Insurance CEO Gideon Ataraire, echoed the message, highlighting the low cost of coverage relative to asset value and urging broader uptake to mitigate future losses.
