Ghana Football Association considers new coach as Queiroz tenure nears end

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly unlikely to extend the contract of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, despite calls for continuity following his leadership during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Queiroz, who was appointed on a four-month contract in April, led the team to the knockout stage for the first time since 2010 before their elimination in the Round of 32.

President John Mahama has publicly supported retaining the 73-year-old Portuguese coach, suggesting that continuity could lead to championship success in future Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and World Cup competitions. Mahama stated, “I’m sure that if we keep this team, and we persuade the coach Carlos Queiroz to continue to work with the team, by the time of the next AFCON and the next World Cup, we’ll have a team that can claim the championship in either of those two competitions.”

However, negotiations have reportedly been hindered by the coach's demands. The GFA is currently considering other candidates as the AFCON qualifiers approach. The situation is further complicated by the departure of assistant coach Roger De Sa, who has moved to a technical director role at Cape Town Spurs.
