Ghana football faces leadership crisis amid poor results and corruption probe

Ghanaian football is facing a period of intense scrutiny and leadership changes following the Black Stars' poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The national team has lost its opening two matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire and a 4-2 loss to The Gambia.

Amidst these sporting failures, calls for the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have intensified. However, Sports Minister Kofi Adams has clarified that the government lacks the legal authority to dissolve the GFA, as it is a legally registered entity. Meanwhile, GFA President Kurt Okraku faces mounting pressure from political figures and former officials to resign.

Separately, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has been removed from his position as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA). His suspension follows a Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) inquiry into an alleged US$623,000 visa facilitation scheme related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has been appointed as the acting Director-General of the NSA while investigations continue.
