Ghana former MP Sarah Adwoa Safo urges High Court trial for shooting suspects

Former Ghanaian MP Sarah Adwoa Safo petitioned the Attorney‑General on June 25, 2026 to transfer the trial of her brother and eight others from the Adenta Circuit Court to the High Court. The request cites jurisdictional limits, arguing that the first‑degree felonies – illegal use of offensive weapons, possession of firearms and vigilante activity – must be tried on indictment before a High Court.

The shooting occurred on June 21, 2026 outside Safo’s brother’s residence, leaving the former lawmaker with serious injuries to her face, ear, jaw and bullet fragments in her skull. Police arrested her brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, and eight additional suspects, granting each a bail of GH₵ 500,000. The accused are expected to appear in court on September 30.

Safo’s legal team argues the Circuit Court lacks authority to hear the case and that moving it to the High Court will ensure a proper, expeditious trial.
