Ghana Gas announces new pipeline project and pentane commercialisation
Ghana National Gas Company CEO Judith Adjobah Blay has announced plans to construct a 278-kilometre onshore high-pressure pipeline connecting Atuabo to Tema. A Final Investment Decision for the 20-inch pipeline is expected by the end of the year. The project aims to allow Ghana to transmit gas from the west to the east using domestic infrastructure, reducing reliance on the more expensive West African Gas Pipeline.
The pipeline will traverse the Western, Central, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, potentially creating jobs and providing energy to industries along the route.
Additionally, the company is targeting the commercialisation of pentane and isopentane recovered from gas processing by the end of 2026. This initiative seeks to reduce environmental impact by minimizing gas flaring at the Atuabo processing facility. The recovered gases will be captured, stored in tankers, and transported to Takoradi Port for export, creating a new revenue stream for the company.
