Ghana Gas plans $500 million pipeline to boost industrial supply

State-owned Ghana Gas is planning a $500 million onshore gas pipeline project to connect the western part of the country to industrial hubs in the southeast, including the Tema enclave. The proposed 278-kilometre pipeline aims to address rising industrial demand and improve energy security by reducing reliance on shared regional networks like the West African Gas Pipeline.

CEO Judith Adjobah Blay stated that a final investment decision is expected by early 2027, with the goal of commencing the project by the end of the first quarter of 2027. The company is currently working to secure financing for the venture. The project is part of a broader strategy to manage increasing gas consumption, which is forecasted to rise from 502 mmscfd this year to 715 mmscfd by 2030.

To support this infrastructure, Ghana Gas expects increased supply from the Eni-operated offshore Sankofa project by 2028. Additionally, the company is considering a new gas processing plant to handle surplus gas from the Tullow-operated Jubilee and TEN oil fields. Under a proposed structure, the government would hold a 30% stake in the new plant, with the remaining portion funded by private firms.
