Ghana Gender Minister seeks stronger Canada-Africa ties for women entrepreneurs
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Ghana’s Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, has called for enhanced cooperation between Canada and African nations to expand economic opportunities for women. Speaking at the Canada–Africa Policy Roundtable in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Lartey emphasized that building inclusive economies requires addressing structural barriers that limit women’s participation in economic activities.
Lartey identified three priority areas for deeper cooperation: improving access to affordable finance for women-owned businesses, increasing women’s involvement in regional and international trade, and supporting skills development, technology, childcare, and social protection.
She highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a vital mechanism for linking women-owned businesses to larger markets. However, she noted that entrepreneurs require practical support, such as assistance with product standards, certification, and digital commerce, to fully leverage these opportunities. The Minister also acknowledged existing Canadian-backed initiatives in Ghana, including projects focused on trade, market participation for young women, and climate-resilient livelihoods.
