Ghana Geological Survey Authority implements seven new mining regulations
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has entered a new operational phase following the implementation of seven legislative instruments on August 26, 2026. These regulations address a ten-year regulatory vacuum that existed since the enactment of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority Act, 2016.
The new legal framework covers a broad range of technical areas, including large-scale geological mapping, earthquake monitoring, seismic investigations, and geoscientific standards. It also establishes rules for ground investigations, licensing agreements, and the designation of geoheritage sites. Additionally, the regulations govern mineral resource exploration up to the pre-feasibility study stage.
According to Isaac Tandoh, CEO of the Minerals Commission, the regulations are intended to strengthen the consistency of geological investigations and provide a scientific basis for the Authority to manage data and advise both the government and the mining industry. The move aims to reduce information asymmetries and replace speculative practices with structured, scientific exploration frameworks to protect industrial investments and ecological assets.
