Ghana Gold Board sets new pricing rules and reports $16.1 bn gold purchases in 2025

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) announced a new approved pricing threshold for licensed gold buyers effective 24 June 2026. Tier 2 buyers may add no more than GH₵30 of their commission to the purchase price, which must not exceed the GoldBod published price plus any approved rate‑gap bonus. Breaches constitute offences under the Ghana Gold Board Act and may lead to prosecution, licence suspension or revocation.

Parliamentary statements revealed that 1,184 gold‑buying companies were licensed as of 31 May 2026, comprising aggregators, self‑financing aggregators, Tier 2 and Tier 1 buyers. From January 2025 to May 2026 the Board purchased 135.843 metric tonnes of gold, 135.221 tonnes of which came from artisanal and small‑scale mining, generating over US$10 billion in 2025. The Board’s expenditure on gold purchases reached approximately US$16.1 billion, with US$9.8 billion spent in 2025 alone.

From 1 July 2026 the Board will adopt London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) benchmark prices, publishing morning and afternoon rates converted to cedis using the Bank of Ghana’s reference exchange rate. Officials say the move aims to improve market transparency, reduce smuggling and align Ghana’s gold trade with international standards.
