Ghana Gold Board rewards NACOC and eyes record artisanal gold output in 2026

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) presented a cheque of GH¢12.65 million to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) as a reward for its role in seizing 17 gold bars from illegal traders in 2025. The payment reflects 50 % of the proceeds from the confiscated gold, with 10 % allocated to the informant, 20 % to the officers involved, and the remaining 20 % to NACOC as an institution.

GoldBod also reported that it purchased between 50 and 54 metric tonnes of gold from artisanal and small‑scale miners in the first half of 2026. At this pace, the sector is on track to match or exceed the 2025 record of 104 metric tonnes, which had already overtaken large‑scale mining as Ghana’s biggest source of gold. The artisanal segment generated nearly US$11 billion in foreign‑exchange earnings last year, supporting the country’s external balances as gold remains its top export. The board’s 2026 forecasts assume an average price of about US$5,000 per ounce and weekly purchases of roughly 2.5 tonnes.
