Ghana Gold Board Gains International Backing and Launches Forest Reclamation Project
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) secured substantial international support at the Sustainability & Responsible Sourcing Summit 2026 in London, organised by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) and the World Gold Council. Representative Richard Nunekpeku highlighted Ghana’s regulatory reforms aimed at traceability, formalising artisanal and small‑scale mining, local refining and value addition. The LBMA acknowledged Ghana’s growing strategic role in the precious‑metals market and pledged collaboration on traceability systems and responsible‑sourcing frameworks.
In parallel, GoldBod signed a landmark agreement with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Forestry Commission to restore the degraded Tano‑Nimri Forest Reserve. CEO Sammy Gyamfi outlined a pilot phase covering 50 hectares of the reserve, with civil‑engineering works funded at roughly 27.9 million Cedis and afforestation costing about 7.2 million Cedis over ten years, totaling an estimated 36.35 million Cedis. The project targets the environmental damage caused by illegal mining and aims to combine engineering, disciplined enforcement and ecological restoration.
Both initiatives underscore GoldBod’s dual focus on advancing responsible gold sourcing and mitigating the ecological impacts of mining in Ghana.
