Ghana Gold Board targets formalization of artisanal mining
The Ghana Gold Board has been established to regulate the gold trade and formalize artisanal mining operations. The initiative aims to transition small-scale miners from illegal activities, known locally as ‘galamsey’, into a structured system that provides licensing, safety training, and access to modern equipment.
By integrating these miners into the formal economy, the Board seeks to increase transparency and generate significant foreign exchange, with a target of US$1.40 billion by September 2026. The program also intends to reinvest revenues into community infrastructure, such as schools and clinics, while addressing environmental damage caused by unregulated mining.
