Ghana Gold Board to implement gold traceability technology

The Ghana Gold Board is initiating a national competitive tendering process to acquire advanced traceability technology. According to CEO Sammy Gyamfi, the system aims to ensure all gold purchased by the Board originates from legal and approved sources by tracing every ounce back to its specific mine of origin.

Ghana is currently the top gold producer in Africa and ranks sixth globally, with an annual production of approximately 185 tonnes. To support this industry and sanitize small-scale mining, the Board has deployed a task force of over 150 people to combat gold smuggling. Since January 2025, the Board reports having collected 170 metric tonnes of gold.

In addition to mining oversight, the Board is working to recover 150 hectares of degraded forests by next year. This land reclamation effort involves collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to protect national ecology and biodiversity.
