Ghana rises to sixth largest global gold producer
Ghana has reached a significant milestone in its mining sector, rising to sixth place among the world’s largest gold producers in 2025. The country produced 5.94 million ounces (approximately 185 tonnes) of gold, representing a 23.41% increase from the 4.82 million ounces recorded in 2024. This growth allowed Ghana to overtake the United States, which produced 157 tonnes, partly due to technical challenges in Nevada.
For the first time in over a century, small-scale mining accounted for 52.4% of Ghana’s total gold production, surpassing large-scale mining output. This shift is attributed to policy reforms and the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in 2025 to provide structure to small-scale trading.
GoldBod is also spearheading environmental and economic initiatives. The organization is set to reclaim 50 hectares of degraded land in the Tano Numri Forest Reserve, with plans to expand to 150 hectares next year. Additionally, GoldBod is financing the rehabilitation of three water treatment plants affected by illegal mining. To promote local value addition, a gold tokenization program is scheduled to launch in 2027, enabling citizens to participate in fractional gold investments.
