Ghana government pledges investment in higher education and KNUST hospital

The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing the nation’s higher education system through sustained investment in infrastructure, research capacity, and digital transformation. Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak emphasized that these interconnected priorities are essential for making tertiary institutions globally competitive and future-ready.

Key reforms initiated since January 2025 include the ‘No-Fee-Stress’ initiative to reduce financial burdens on first-year students and the expansion of student loan support. The administration has also moved toward making tertiary education free for eligible students.

In a related development, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu pledged government support via the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to complete the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Teaching Hospital. The project, which has faced delays since 2007 due to funding and administrative issues, is expected to improve both medical education and healthcare access for surrounding communities. Discussions between university management and the ministry also focused on advancing STEM education and enhancing research collaboration.
