Ghana Health Minister calls for separation of board and management roles
Ghanaian Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has called for a strict separation between the governance roles of institutional boards and the day-to-day administrative duties of management. Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat in Ho, Akandoh emphasized that boards should focus on oversight rather than interfering in daily operations.
To support this structure, the Minister committed to ensuring health agencies have appropriate Legislative Instruments (LIs) to provide clear operational frameworks. He noted that defining the distinct responsibilities of boards and Chief Executive Officers is essential to prevent institutional infractions and promote accountability.
Additionally, Akandoh urged health institutions to exercise greater prudence regarding public funds. He specifically highlighted the need for value-for-money decisions concerning seminars, training programs, and official travel, citing the country’s current resource constraints.
