Ghana Health Service takes control of Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital
On 7 August 2026 the completed 120‑bed Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital was formally handed over by the contractor to Ghana’s Ministry of Health, which then transferred responsibility to the Ghana Health Service (GHS). The handover removes a key administrative barrier, but the opening date remains uncertain as financial obligations to the contractor have not yet been fully settled and staffing and operational arrangements are still pending.
The facility, finished for more than a year, has faced pressure from residents and parents in the Weija‑Gbawe Municipality, who staged a demonstration in May 2026 demanding its activation. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) was involved after a meeting with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Once operational, the hospital is expected to provide specialised paediatric care for the local community and ease the burden on the ageing St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
