Ghana High Commission issues safety advisory for South Africa protests

The High Commission of the Republic of Ghana in Pretoria has issued an urgent safety advisory to Ghanaian nationals living in or visiting South Africa ahead of planned anti-immigration protests on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

The demonstrations are being organized by the March and March movement and other groups campaigning against undocumented immigration. The High Commission warned of potential disruptions in major urban areas, specifically advising citizens to exercise extreme caution in the Central Business Districts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

To ensure personal safety, the mission urged Ghanaians to avoid all protest gatherings, marches, and areas of confrontation, even if they appear peaceful. Citizens were advised to limit non-essential movement and avoid transport hubs, taxi ranks, and major intersections where large crowds may gather. The advisory also recommended staying alert to road blockages and public transport disruptions, keeping valid immigration documentation accessible, and refraining from engaging in arguments with protesters regarding immigration or political issues.
