Ghana High Court advances extradition hearing for fraud suspect Frederick Kumi

The High Court in Accra has scheduled a July 9 hearing on a motion to stay the extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, also known as Abu Trica. Kumi is wanted by United States authorities on allegations of an $8 million romance‑fraud scheme.

His defence lawyer, Oliver Barker‑Vormawor, has asked the court to force the Attorney‑General to reveal where Kumi is being held, arguing that secret detention violates his constitutional rights. The court previously paused the case to seek a response from the Attorney‑General and has now accelerated the timetable, requiring both prosecution and defence to appear on the set date.

Kumi has been in custody since December 2025 after a Ghanaian operation at the request of the United States. If the stay is denied, he is likely to be transferred to U.S. custody pending trial; if granted, the defence plans to appeal to Ghana’s Supreme Court.
