Ghana hosts inaugural African Maritime Security Forum
At the inaugural African Maritime Security Forum held at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra, Ghana, Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei warned that criminal networks are increasingly exploiting the connections between sea, land, and air. Adjei stated that because illicit activities can quickly transition across these domains, no single African nation can secure its waters in isolation.
The Minister called for enhanced regional cooperation, intelligence-led operations, and stronger information-sharing among African governments and international partners. He emphasized that maritime security is vital for protecting the blue economy, as the ocean serves as a critical source of livelihood and a strategic trade route rather than just a territorial boundary.
Adjei also highlighted the importance of translating international conventions and national policies into practical measures through investment in capable personnel and institutions. He specifically noted the longstanding partnership with Denmark, which has supported maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea through capacity-building initiatives for the Ghana Armed Forces, including anti-piracy training facilities and equipment for the Ghana Navy.
