Ghana ICT Minister calls for flexible financing to boost digital economy

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has called for flexible and innovative financing models to support the nation’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector. Speaking at a Development Bank Ghana roundtable in Accra, the Minister noted that while digital connectivity is improving, technology businesses require access to capital to realize the full benefits of a digital economy.

Mr. George emphasized that traditional lending models, which rely on conventional collateral, are often unsuitable for technology enterprises. He advocated for the increased use of venture capital, private equity, blended finance, and credit enhancements to support businesses in fields such as fintech, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and agritech.

In a separate initiative, the Minister addressed beneficiaries of the Girls in ICT program, urging them to use technology as a tool for national development. The program aims to bridge the gender gap in specialized fields like software engineering and data science. Additionally, the government’s One Million Coders Programme has reported 141,954 registered accounts as of August 2026, showing high demand for training in data analytics and AI.
