Ghana ICU urges government to revive state-owned enterprises to create jobs

The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) of Ghana has submitted a resolution to President John Dramani Mahama urging the recapitalisation and revival of distressed state‑owned enterprises such as Volta Star Textiles, Aluworks, and the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO). The union argues that restoring these strategic assets will generate thousands of jobs for unemployed graduates and reduce reliance on imported goods, thereby conserving foreign exchange.

The resolution, signed by National Chairman Al‑Haji Nuru‑Deen Al‑Hassan and General Secretary Morgan Ayawine, also opposes the proposed sale of a 70 % stake in VALCO to a private investor and commends recent government steps to revitalise PBC PLC. ICU stresses that reviving these firms is essential for Ghana’s industrial transformation and socio‑economic development.
