Hamile explosion kills three during Ghana border patrol
An explosion involving a motor tricycle suspected of carrying dynamite killed three people in Hamile, Upper West Region, on November 3, 2026. The fatalities included one Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer and two civilians.
The incident occurred during a border patrol operation along an unauthorized route near the Ghana-Burkina Faso border. According to the GIS, a four-member patrol team intercepted a tricycle, prompting the rider to attempt an escape, which resulted in the detonation. Some reports suggest the blast was triggered when gunfire struck the suspected explosives during a pursuit.
A second immigration officer sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by a Ghana Air Force medical team from Nandom Hospital to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra for specialist treatment. The government has pledged to cover all medical expenses for the injured officer.
Following the explosion, the government imposed an 11-hour curfew in Hamile Township and surrounding communities, effective from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily. Authorities have also prohibited the possession of firearms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons in the affected area. Tensions rose in the community following the blast, with reports of clashes between local youth and security personnel.
