Ghana Immigration officer transferred following viral extortion video

A Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer has been transferred from the Accra International Airport following a viral video in which the official allegedly demanded money for “breakfast” from a passenger. The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) confirmed the transfer after the footage sparked national debate regarding the conduct of officials at Ghana's international gateways.

In a related development, GACL announced that two Port Health officers have been barred from working at Accra International Airport and other GACL-operated facilities. These officers were found to have extorted money from a foreign traveler seeking a Yellow Fever Card.

These incidents follow increased public concern regarding solicitation and extortion by state agency personnel at airports. In response, GACL established a dedicated hotline in June to allow passengers to report misconduct involving various agencies, including the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Revenue Authority Customs Division, and the Ghana Police Service.
