Ghana Gold Board generates US$1.315 billion in forex for August

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has reported significant foreign exchange generation under the newly implemented Ghana Accelerated National Reserve Accumulation Policy (GANRAP). In August 2026, GoldBod generated US$1.315 billion in foreign exchange. Of this, US$668.21 million was provided to commercial banks to support market stability, while US$646.59 million was transferred to the Bank of Ghana for reserve accumulation.

GoldBod projects generating US$1.4 billion in foreign exchange for September 2026, with an intended split of US$700 million for commercial banks and up to US$700 million for central bank reserves. This follows the formal implementation of the GANRAP framework on August 3, 2026, which establishes a collaborative financing model for artisanal and small-scale mining.

However, the transition of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) from the Bank of Ghana to GoldBod has drawn scrutiny. Reports indicate the program faced substantial losses in 2025, with some estimates citing costs as high as GH₵22 billion. Political figures have called for greater accountability regarding these losses and the transparency of GoldBod’s financial reporting.
