Ghana importers urge FDA to resolve port permit delays

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has urged the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to address delays in issuing import codes and permits for regulated goods at ports.

According to a statement by IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Asaki Awingobit, these delays prevent importers from completing necessary FDA processes, which in turn stalls customs clearance and cargo delivery. The association noted that while it supports the FDA’s regulatory role over food, drugs, and medical devices, the current bottlenecks at the Tema Port are causing significant operational issues.

The IEAG warned that prolonged cargo dwell times lead to increased costs, including terminal storage charges, shipping-line demurrage, container detention, and higher financing and logistics expenses. There is a concern that these additional costs may eventually be passed on to consumers through increased prices.
