Ghana inaugurates committee to oversee virtual asset regulation

Ghana has transitioned from the legislative phase to the coordinated supervision phase of its virtual asset regulation. The Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission are working to fully operationalize the country’s virtual-asset framework by 2027.

To facilitate this, the Virtual Assets Coordinating Committee has been inaugurated. This statutory body was created under the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 (Act 1154) to prevent institutional silos and manage risks associated with the rapid evolution of digital assets. The committee includes representatives from the Bank of Ghana, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Cyber Security Authority, and the Financial Intelligence Centre.

Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama noted that the move follows a 2024 national assessment which identified significant adoption of virtual assets and their growing connection to the formal financial system. The regulatory goal is to protect consumers, financial integrity, and stability while providing guardrails for legitimate innovation.
