Ghana inaugurates committee to implement constitutional reforms
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine has inaugurated the 11-member Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) in Accra. The committee is tasked with translating the government’s position paper on constitutional reform into legislative amendment bills.
Chaired by Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, the committee includes members such as Dr. Justice Srem Sai, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, and Charlotte Osei. The group aims to present the first set of non-entrenched constitutional amendment bills to Parliament by November 2026. Some proposed amendments may eventually be subject to a referendum alongside the 2027 District Assembly elections.
To facilitate the process, officials have prepared a ‘zero draft’ document that incorporates recommendations accepted by the government. The committee has approximately sixteen months to complete its mandate.
In response to these developments, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also formed its own committee. Led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, this party committee is reviewing the government’s position paper and is expected to submit its report within the coming weeks.
