Ghana initiatives expand economic opportunities for persons with disabilities

Efforts to enhance economic inclusion for persons with disabilities (PWDs) are advancing in Ghana through both financial education and direct resource provision.

First National Bank Ghana has partnered with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) to launch a financial literacy training programme. Held in Accra, the initiative provided over 40 participants with practical training in money management, savings, and investment strategies through modules such as ‘Understanding My Money’ and ‘Growing My Money’. The program aims to address barriers to financial participation by equipping PWDs with the knowledge necessary to manage personal and business banking.

In the Eastern Region, the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly distributed livelihood equipment to 35 PWDs to support business development. Funded by the government’s Disability Common Fund, the assistance included items such as chest freezers, milling machines, knitting machines, and wheelchairs. The initiative, overseen by the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, is designed to foster financial independence and reduce poverty by helping individuals outside the formal employment sector establish sustainable livelihoods.
