Ghana Interior Minister proposes mandatory drug testing for public sector recruits
Ghanaian Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka has announced plans to propose mandatory drug testing for all individuals seeking employment in the public sector. The proposal will be presented to the Cabinet via an Information Paper to prevent individuals with active drug-related issues from entering public service.
The decision follows a recent security services recruitment exercise involving over 100,000 applicants. During the medical screening process, more than 4,000 applicants tested positive for various drugs, and approximately 2,000 others were disqualified due to mental health concerns. Muntaka noted that without these screenings, many of these individuals would have likely been recruited into the civil service.
In addition to prospective recruits, the Minister acknowledged that drug abuse is a challenge among some current security personnel and stated that the government is taking steps to assist those already in service who are struggling with addiction.
