Ghana Journalists Association Northern Region launches 2026 media awards
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Northern Regional Chapter inaugurated its 2026 media awards, the sixth edition of the annual ceremony, in Tamale. The event was held under the theme “Empowering the Next Generation: The Role of the Media in Digital Skills, Innovation and Youth Opportunities.”
The competition is open to journalists from the Northern, North East and Savannah regions working in print, electronic and online media. Award categories include environmental, energy, water and sanitation, education, health, tourism, disability, sports, agriculture, road safety, peace and conflict‑sensitive reporting, as well as recognitions for camerawork, young female journalists and overall regional journalist of the year.
Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John, the guest of honour, highlighted the media’s partnership with governance and urged journalists to maintain accuracy, fairness and balance while embracing digital skills, data journalism and fact‑checking. GJA Northern Regional Chairman Yakubu Abdul‑Majeed called for responsible reporting to sustain peace in Dagbon and stressed the need for greater digital literacy and ICT education for Ghana’s youth.
