Ghana Journalists Association seeks minimum wage legislation
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is advocating for a private member’s bill in Parliament to establish a mandatory minimum wage for journalists. GJA President Albert Dwumfour announced the initiative, stating that the proposed legislation would apply to both state-owned and privately owned media organizations, including newspapers, radio, and television stations.
Dwumfour noted that the association has already engaged with the Speaker of Parliament and parliamentary leadership to collaborate on the bill. The push aims to address economic vulnerabilities, job insecurity, and inadequate working tools facing media practitioners. The GJA argues that ensuring decent remuneration is essential to protecting professional integrity, media independence, and national security, as low pay can make journalists more susceptible to external pressures and inducements.
