Ghana Labour Minister pledges job creation and engagement with TUC

Ghanaian Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Emmanuel Agyekum, has pledged to prioritize job creation and deepen engagement with organized labor to address unemployment and worker welfare. During a visit to the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra, Agyekum emphasized the government's commitment to expanding productive sectors and leveraging industrial development to create opportunities, particularly for young people.

The Minister expressed a desire to collaborate with both the public and private sectors to reduce unemployment, suggesting that Ghana could learn from international models using technology and value-chain opportunities. He also assured the TUC that the government would maintain social dialogue to ensure industrial peace.

In response, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah called for an urgent review of the Labour Act. Specifically, the TUC requested changes to prevent employers from terminating contracts without providing reasons. Ansah also highlighted the need for improved wages, better implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure, and more sustainable job creation for the growing workforce.
