Ghana Lands Ministry assesses progress in illegal mining fight
Officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources have provided assessments regarding the government’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. Zambaga Rufai Saminu, the ministry’s Communications Director, rated the government’s performance an 8 out of 10, citing progress made through the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS). NAIMOS coordinates intelligence-led operations to arrest suspects and seize equipment, particularly in forest reserves and near water bodies. To prevent re-infestation, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) monitors reclaimed lands.
However, the ministry has also cautioned against viewing a state of emergency as a “magic wand” for the crisis. Spokesperson Paa Kwesi Schandorf noted that while an emergency declaration could increase security, its effectiveness depends on the specific measures implemented. He emphasized that the discussion should focus on practical outcomes and the potential economic impact on local communities rather than just the declaration itself. Schandorf pointed out that existing enforcement mechanisms and security operations are already active in disrupting illegal mining activities.
