Ghana launches free rabies vaccination campaign for 25,000 animals
The Veterinary Services Department of Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture has launched a nationwide free rabies vaccination campaign. Targeting 25,000 dogs and cats in high-risk areas, the initiative runs throughout September 2026 to observe World Rabies Month under the theme ‘Stronger Together’.
The campaign supports Ghana’s strategic goal of achieving zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. While vaccinations are free during September, pet owners will be required to pay prescribed fees once the period concludes.
In addition to vaccinations, the department is conducting public education efforts through schools, religious institutions, and media platforms. To ensure broad reach, educational content will be disseminated in Twi, Ga, Ewe, and Hausa. Authorities have urged the public to seek immediate medical attention following animal bites and to report such incidents to veterinary centers. Officials noted that rabies is virtually 100 per cent fatal once symptoms appear, but remains preventable through timely vaccination. Furthermore, pet owners are reminded that failing to vaccinate animals may violate local Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) bye-laws.
