Ghana launches GHS598m project to electrify 206 Volta communities

The Ghanaian government has launched the ‘Big Push Electrification Project’, a GHS598 million initiative designed to connect 206 underserved communities in the Volta Region to the national electricity grid. Implemented by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition in partnership with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the project will span all 18 municipal and district assemblies in the region.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition Dr John Abdulai Jinapor announced that the works, being carried out by Byes and Ways Limited, are expected to be completed within six months. The Volta Region is one of four areas—alongside the Savannah, Central, and Oti regions—selected for the first phase of an annual regional strategy aimed at achieving universal electricity access across Ghana by 2030.

The expansion is intended to support households, schools, health facilities, and small businesses by providing reliable power. This infrastructure development is part of a broader effort to reduce the electricity access gap and improve economic opportunities in rural areas through enhanced communication, refrigeration, and information technology capabilities.
