Ghana launches initiative to reduce maternal mortality
Ghana is intensifying national efforts to reduce maternal mortality through the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Plan (MMARP). Led by President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Health, the initiative aims to address preventable complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
According to estimates from the World Health Organization, Ghana has reduced its maternal mortality ratio from 943 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2000 to 234 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. Despite this progress, the current rate remains significantly higher than the Sustainable Development Goal and WHO benchmark of fewer than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.
