Ghana launches national union for informal waste workers

The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), supported by the Ministry of Local Government and various development partners, has officially launched the Federation of Informal Sector Waste Workers Associations of Ghana (FISWWAG). This new national union aims to strengthen the informal waste sector by providing a unified voice for workers across all 16 regions of the country.

As essential actors in Ghana’s circular economy, these workers play a critical role in recovering recyclable materials, diverting waste from landfills, and supplying industries with secondary raw materials. The union’s mandate focuses on advocating for safer working conditions, occupational health and safety, social protection, better market access, and meaningful participation in policy decisions.

Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, confirmed that the union’s formation is a lawful exercise under the Labor Act 2003 and International Labor Organization conventions. He pledged government commitment to social dialogue and inclusive employment within the sector.
