Ghana launches Operation Water Shield to combat illegal mining
Ghana's National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has launched ‘Operation Water Shield,’ a sustained, intelligence-led enforcement campaign to protect the nation's major river systems from illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Unlike previous reactive raids, this operation treats entire river basins as single enforcement zones. It will monitor water resources from their source areas and upper catchments through to downstream communities and water-treatment facilities. The primary focus includes the Birim, Ankobra, Tano, Bia, Pra, and Offin rivers, as well as sections of the Black and White Volta systems.
Enforcement teams will utilize satellite data and tip-offs to preempt illegal activity. The campaign aims to dismantle the logistics and financial structures supporting illegal mining, targeting the seizure of equipment such as excavators, dredging machines, and water pumps. Additionally, the secretariat will increase scrutiny on individuals and companies that supply, rent, or fabricate machinery used in illegal mining operations.
