Ghana launches rCOMSDEP to formalize small-scale mining
The Government of Ghana has launched the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) in the Western Region, specifically targeting areas such as Ahanta West, Mpohor Fiase, and Nzema East. The initiative aims to formalize small-scale mining by registering and certifying mining cooperatives through the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Officials emphasized that the program seeks to move beyond mere enforcement against illegal mining toward a model of community-based, legal operation. The strategy focuses on creating local jobs, supporting traditional authorities, and ensuring mining benefits reach host communities. Key components include the adoption of modern mineral-processing technologies to reduce the use of harmful chemicals like mercury and cyanide, as well as environmental restoration efforts such as the Tree for Life Initiative.
In Nzema East, three mining cooperatives—the Axim-Agona, Akango-Douale, and Adelekezo societies—were inaugurated under the program. The government is also working on revised mining policies and new laws intended to provide host communities with a stronger voice in decisions regarding their lands.
