Ghana launches yellow fever vaccination campaign in Upper West Region
The Ghana Health Service has initiated a five-day reactive vaccination campaign in the Upper West Region to contain a yellow fever outbreak. Running from October 14 to October 18, 2026, the intervention targets the Wa West, Sissala West, and Sissala East districts.
The campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 244,869 people aged nine months to 60 years. Health workers are utilizing health facilities, strategic public locations such as markets and schools, and mobile outreach teams to reach remote settlements.
The outbreak has affected seven of the region's 11 districts. Nationally, there have been 450 suspected cases, with 88 reported in the Upper West Region, including three laboratory-confirmed deaths. Officials emphasize that vaccination is the most effective method to stop transmission and prevent severe illness, which can lead to organ failure.
